I covered my beds and shrubs/pots with sawdust.

Spreading sawdust around the base of your garden plants can prevent weeds, help retain moisture, and keep roots cooler—all the benefits of mulch without the high price tag! Just be sure to add a nitrogen component to your garden as well, in order to prevent nitrogen deficiency in the soil.
A great way to add nitriphen and phoshates is urine, in a 10/1 ratio with water (The salt in urine isn't appreciated by the plants).
So slash in a watering can!

Tom,
Months away for me yet. We are under a freeze warning. It was -31 ( -40) when I checked this morning. I think they had heavy snow in the Maritimes. Keep your lad busy. I mulched loads of leaves last fall and put them on top of my perennials. Will have to see if it has helped. Not see the soil since November.

I went into our garden for the first time this year, the other day. I only ever see it through the window.
Anyroadup, I noticed there's hardly any grass left! It's all moss!
Well, it looks green and well-kept (from a distance)!
