I came across this occupation while looking at the inmates of Leigh Workhouse 1861. Does anyone know what a clock dresser was/is.

Just a guess, but maybe basic clocks were made by various companies, then worked on to make them more elaborate by a third party prior to selling them.

Similarly clock cases and movements. Dials often having the name of a different company to the people who made the movement.

See third paragraph. Dressing and re dressing. (Won't C&P)

May have been in a production environment rather than a clock maker who did the lot.

Bird Cuckoo Top

This is the decorative hand carved top that goes on the top of the top of the cuckoo clock.

Also known as the head dressing, and is measured end to end how wide it is.

These tops are available in brown, blonde, or green, or unfinished. Does not come with mounts.

I'm wondering if it could be a case maker.

The bloke wouldn't actually make the clock. Yet the finished item, containing the movement would be called a clock.

Maybe they did the carving bits on clocks. Long case clocks have lovely carved tops and pillars.

The majority of English grandfather clocks were made in The Midlands and the North of England.

Some work went into the dials too.

Yes there is quite a bit of detail in the dial of my G/father clock. Coates of Wigan I think it dates back to 1780s. Must have a lot of patients to do something like that.

Going back into the annals of time (anybody ever watch 'Time Tunnel' in the 1960's) going back into the annals of time I once found a clock in my grandparents house in Goose Green and it was the most basic thing you could have ever seen, it was just literally a plain wooden box made out of a plywood type material and it looked like a DIY thing, but as I remember it did have some sort of manufacturing logo on it and a stamp inside, as though it were some sort of quality control stamp, maybe that was what they made in a workhouse Smile
